Definition of a Home Inspector and an Associate Home Inspector License

Home Inspector License

A Home Inspector is a licensed professional authorized to conduct a comprehensive visual examination of a residential property’s major systems and components to identify and report on conditions that may affect safety, function, or value.

Associate Home Inspector License

An Associate Home Inspector is an entry-level license holder who performs home inspections under the supervision of a fully licensed Home Inspector. This license is intended for individuals who are gaining the experience and training required to qualify for full licensure.

***Anyone who performs paid inspections of residential buildings in Rhode Island must be licensed.***

Eligibility for Reciprocity for a Home Inspector and Associate Home Inspector

1. Holds a valid license from another U.S. state, territory, or the District of Columbia, with licensing standards that the board considers substantially equivalent to those in Rhode Island; or

2. Is licensed in this state as a state certified real estate appraiser or to practice architecture or professional engineering, provided the person meets the requirements set forth in R.I. Gen. Laws §§ 5-65.1-4(a)(1), (a)(2), and (a)(4).
